Maria's beautiful, one-off mid-fired slab vessels are original, fresh, contemporary and exciting, characterised by echoes of ancient times. During this brilliant three-day workshop Maria will explain and demonstrate all the steps and processes required to make her vessels, from design, planning, slab making, construction, incising and under glazing.
Day One: August 26
Today will focus on the planning and making of templates for the pre-rolled slabs and construction of the vessel. Pots will be left wrapped in plastic to slowly firm up to leather-hardness during the week.
Day Two: September 2
The leather-hard vessels will be incised with linear and curved designs which students have created as homework from week one. Mark making and application of texture will be explored. Vessels are then left to dry, ready for bisque firing.
Day Three: September 23
The bisque-fired vessels will be under glazed using a selection of delicious colours and then undergo the second and final firing. Students will be emailed when vessels are ready for collection.
Please note: the vessels are vitrified, but considered decorative rather than functional objects.

Beautiful, subtle, unpredictable and unexpected results will always occur with a saggar firing, and these enigmatic qualities are the reason why ceramic artists are magnetically drawn to the process. Diverse organic materials, combustibles, minerals and oxides held close to the ware make every firing different and each piece one of a kind. Earthy and elemental, yet delicately nuanced, the patterns and colours which emerge during firing are perfect for ornamental vessels, statement pieces and sculpted forms.
Learn Kay Wright’s saggar process from start to finish, including surface treatment, types of organic materials to use, preparation and wrapping of saggars, loading and firing the kiln and how to finish your pieces. Kay built her own kilns so has an abundance of knowledge of the firing process to share. At the end of the sessions you will have original saggar-fired pots of your own to take home. The masterclass includes a bonus workshop on the Japanese art of Kintsugi (to join with gold ): learn how to transform a treasured cracked or broken vessel into a thing of even greater beauty. .
FURTHER DETAILS OF THE MASTERCLASS WILL BE SENT AFTER BOOKING.
Kay Wright
Kay formed an instant connection to the saggar firing process during her visual art studies. Fascinated by its serendipitous nature and unpredictable results, she set off on her own single-minded exploration. Kay is intrigued by patterns in nature and uses the techniques she has developed to emulate natural elements and effects in her ceramic pieces. A regular exhibitor and finalist in numerous art awards, Kay works from her home studio, firing in kilns she built herself. Her saggar vessels can be found in private collections overseas, as well as Australia.

A unique opportunity to work with production potter Ellen Terrell whose breath-taking reduction-fired lustre decoration techniques rely on skills and knowledge fast becoming lost to the world. Learn first-hand from a master of her craft and benefit from Ellen’s many years of experimentation and fine tuning.
The mystery surrounding lustre and its shimmering, magical effects is not only due to its beauty but also to its temperament and the need for exacting kiln management. This ancient form of decoration dates as far back as the 9th century, so being part of this masterclass means you will also be part of the long history of lustre work. The precious silver and copper lustres you’ll be using are hand-made by Ellen, who will share her method.
Ellen will make and bring a variety of vessels already bisque-fired and glazed with the specialised recipes required for lustre application. This bypasses lengthy preparation for students and offers more control so students may sink entirely into the processes of lustre application and focus on kiln management. Up to five pots will be available to each student at a modest charge.
Ellen will also teach an integrated workshop in sgraffito, relief and carving during one of the kiln warm-ups, techniques exemplified in her own work. Ellen’s extensively researched lustre-friendly base glaze recipes will be shared, along with much wisdom.
We thank Ellen for her wholehearted commitment to passing on this art and look forward to this beautiful event!
Ellen will be working extensively in the studio in the weeks leading up to the masterclasses and during the interim week of the masterclasses. Students are welcome to join her at any time to observe, talk, participate and learn. Further details will be emailed after booking. Numbers are strictly limited.
Ellen Terrell
A life-long production potter and ceramics teacher based in the Daintree, we found Ellen by old school word of mouth. Her work and experience is what speaks to us, not her social media presence nor her website (Ellen does neither). Ellen is an experienced, dedicated and very generous teacher, with a finely-honed attention to detail and is totally committed to sharing and passing on her knowledge, handed down to her by renowned lustre potter, the late Bob Connery.

3D Painting
with Petalia Humphreys
DATE: Saturday February 18
TIME: 10am – 3pm
COST: $125 or $115 BFF Members
Join artist Petalia Humphreys for a playful examination of formal approaches to two-dimensional and three-dimensional painting. Exploring and reinterpreting familiar architectural surrounds, this workshop will guide you through Petalia’s making processes that includes digital photography – using an iPhone to capture compositions that are translated to digital and paper templates to then inform three-dimensional paintings. Petalia Humphreys is a full-time artist with a background in Visual Art education. Working with building materials, Humphreys’ practice spans from small-scale hand-crafted paintings through to large site-specific public art installations. Her works reveal concern for the physical mapping of spaces, of spatial and perceptual shifts. Petalia is the founder of Studio 26, launching its first series of critical conversations and exhibitions in 2022.
