Asia Pacific Video on Tour
Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art

Asia Pacific Video’ brings together some of the leading artists of the Asia Pacific region, through video works spanning two decades from the QAGOMA Collection. The selection conveys the important role that moving images continues to play in the Asia Pacific region and includes works featured in the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, signalling how the medium has become the chosen form of art-making for many of the region’s artists.

The use of film and video have empowered artists to create works in locations beyond conventional studio settings and art centres in Asia and the Pacific, and this has provided their practices with a renewed mobility and opportunity to create art in new places and directly reveal these contexts to audiences in other parts of the world. The medium has also offered artists new opportunity to experiment with technologies, to capture bodily actions and performative practices, and develop new ways to explore materials, objects and environments. This exhibition shows examples of how artists apply such devices, and through them stage interventions into public space, comment on social and political conditions, and involve communities in collective acts. Employing their own bodies, performing acts of endurance, and experimenting with technologies and theatrical scenarios, the artists deliver a range of critical, humorous and magical insights into their own artistic motivations and the contexts in which they live and work, offering us an active experience of creative thinking through the power and possibility of the moving image.

Asia Pacific Video will feature works by Joyce Ho (Taiwan), Chim↑Pom (Japan), Nathan Pohio (New Zealand), Junebum Park (Korea), and Yang Zhenzhong (China), Salote Tawale (Fiji/Australia) and Takahiko Iimura (Japan) plus other works from the QAGOMA Collection.

This tour will run parallel with QAGOMA’s Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three Decades of the APT exhibition which will be exhibiting at Noosa Regional Gallery (10 Dec - 27 Feb)  collaborating the regions community art centre and  regional gallery.
The Asia Pacific Video on tour at BFAC is supported by Noosa Regional Gallery.
